Sesame Street Saturdays: Conversations with Bert

Have you ever dreamed about talk shows hosted by Muppets? Have you ever wondered what Bert's favorite type of sock is? Or what his favorite nutritious beverage is? What about how he would interact with Saturday Night Live mainstay Andy Samberg? Well all of these questions and more are answered in the most recent, possibly most awesome, Sesame Street viral video released on YouTube on Thursday. Conversations With Bert features everyone's favorite paperclip collecting, pigeon loving, unibrowed yellow person as he interviews celebrities. Part 1 (implying more parts!) features Andy Samberg as a guest... but enough from me, just watch it for yourself because it's fantastic!

But that's not all! Our good friend, the extremely talented Stuart Reeves has created something magnificent. With his incredible digital art skills, Stuart has created a desktop wallpaper from the teaser poster for The Muppets that has the perfect dimensions, amazing coloring... and just absolutely everything. Check it out below, click on it to see it in all of its gorgeous glory, set it as your desktop background, and spread around like a video of a cat and a gorilla becoming friends!

Muppets on Your iPhone: Bert's Bag

Bert's Bag
$3.99 on iTunes

Ryan Dosier - Hi there! I've got a brand new iPhone app to review for you. Care to take a look? Well, today I played the brand new iPhone app from IDEO Toy Labs and Sesame Street, "Bert's Bag" which stars, you guessed it, Bert (Professor Hastings declined the script) and a brown paper bag.

The game is very simple (which turns out is a good idea for games geared at preschoolers), because all you have to do is open Bert's bag, dump it out onto the table, and count the contents with him. There are numerous types of things to count, and all are very Bert-esque. When I played, I counted toy tops, Bert's international coin collection (which consisted of three coins), and keys.

And honestly, that's all there is to the game. I suppose there are tons of different things you could count with Bert, as each bag is different, but after three turns I was bored. In a way, I see this as perfect for Bert; a boring game with a bunch of weird items.

In the Sesame Street iPhone app hierarchy, "Bert's Bag" ranks somewhere below "Elmo's Monster Maker" and somewhere above "Rosita's Jump Count." The app is fun to count a long with and it's always fun to see Bert in new material. Eric Jacobson does a fantastic job here, as he makes Bert enthusiastic about some very lame thing.

So, overall, this app is fun for the novelty of having Bert and his excitement over a new bag. This app will be perfect for antsy preschoolers and every once in awhile I'm sure their parents will get a kick out of it too. Go, Bert!

The Muppet Madness Tournament - The End

NOTE: Muppet Comic Mondays has been postponed due to extremely slow online comic store shipping speeds and my local comic shop being closed on Mondays for some reason. So look for our review of The Muppet Show Comic Book: Family Reunion coming soon!

This past weekend, one of the greatest coming-together events of Muppet fans from all over the world finally drew to a close. The Muppet Madness Tournament, sponsored by The MuppetCast and ToughPigs, pitted favorite Muppet characters against each other in an all out brawl of fuzzy proportions. The final round saw Kermit the Frog, Bert and Ernie, Sprocket, Bear, and Gonzo the Great fighting for the title.

Early predictions saw Kermit easily taking the title but that was soon disproved by the might of Bert and Ernie. Yes, the dynamic duo truly proved their staying power by garnering almost twice as many votes as the Frog. Speculation as to why the Frog lost has run rampant recently. Some people are attributing it to the fact that Bert and Ernie are two Muppets, thus have twice the popularity. Some say that it's just the extreme power of Jim Henson and Frank Oz's chemistry that propelled them to victory. Perhaps it was even Gonzo's resurrection that stole some votes away from Kermit.

Whatever the case, huge congratulations are due to Bert and Ernie for taking the gold. One can only assume that the duo plans to celebrate by eating cookies in bed and counting their bottlecap collection.

Congratulations to Bert and Ernie for their great win and congratulations to all of the Muppets in the competition for even making the big dance!

Big thanks to Steve Swanson, Joe Hennes, Ryan Roe, and Dave Hulteen, Jr. for all of their work on this fantastic Muppet fan event!

A Little Bit Bert

Justin H. Piatt - I never identified with Bert. I never understood the character. I could get Oscar. Who hasn’t been a grouch? Ernie was who I wanted to be, and at times I very much am. Grover is a sweet, good-natured, wonderful character that I admire and love. I could identify with almost any Muppet… except Bert.

Then, a few years ago, I realized who this character was, why he worked, and that I truly did identify with him. Perhaps everyone can. I gained a new appreciation for who Bert is. And I—like you and everyone else— am a little bit Bert.

Bert is a surprisingly complex character, despite his initially being perhaps the simplest, most uninteresting of Muppets on Sesame Street. When he was first introduced to the world, Bert was nothing more than the straight man. An old stick in the mud, whose only personality trait was to be dull. But there is so much more to him than that. And here’s why I can relate to Bert.

Though considered a “stick in the mud,” Bert actually can never resist a good game. I identify with this aspect of Bert’s personality – his initial reluctance to join in on a game or one of Ernie’s other activities. For me, I want to join in, but am frequently too shy to do so. With Bert, I think he’d like to do both. He wants the peace and quiet to enjoy his book, but can’t help it when he realizes just how much fun Ernie is having. At the last wedding I attended, I didn’t dance. I didn’t dance until the very last song I was there to hear. In this, I am a little bit Bert.

Bert has his obsessions. His love of pigeons, his fondness of paper clips and bottle caps. Oatmeal. I don’t know if anyone on Sesame Street has ever really questioned Bert’s love of these things, but they certainly don’t share it. Well, I do. Not specifically his love of paper clips and such, but I identify with the love of something unpopular. The “nerd” aspect of Bert’s personality, if you will, in which he preaches the greatness of paper clips, the wonder of bottle caps, the majesty of pigeons, and the oatmealness of oatmeal. All things which are generally considered “uncool” that Bert can’t help but claim otherwise.

I think this is something all Muppet fans can relate to. We are frequently among the “misunderstood.” The “nerds.” Very few under the age of thirty have any sort of appreciation for the Muppets. Muppet fans are very much a minority, even with the recent rise in their popularity. Perhaps Bert expressed this best in his song “I Wish I Had a Friend to Play with Me.” Acknowledging that he knew of no one who shared his interests, he reflected what we all feel at times: A sense of loneliness in our attachment to the Muppets, and a feeling of being out of place at times because of it. But, we know what we love and what we love… is oatmeal. Er, Muppets. We’re not ashamed of it, just as Bert is not ashamed of what he loves most. In this, I am a little bit Bert.

There is much more to Bert to discuss, but this is what I learn from him. This is how I am Bert. Now, how are you a little bit Bert?
