Jim Henson's 75th Birthday

Ryan Dosier - September 24th is always a special day in the lives of Muppet fans, and this year is no different. 2011 marks 75 years after the birth of Jim Henson. Jim is responsible for everything you see here on this webpage and we truly wouldn't be anything without his being born on this day 75 years ago. Emotions are an odd thing on this day as well. We feel sad that Jim isn't here, but we feel happy that 75 years later, we're still talking about this kid from Mississippi who took his mother's coat, sewed up his dream, and created a legacy that continues to grow and inspire every day.

I always prefer to spotlight the happy over the sad when I have the choice, and on someone's birthday I think that's the best thing we can do. Just look at all the amazingly happy things happening for Jim on his birthday!
Google has changed its homepage design in honor of Jim Henson's birthday. Their current Google Doodle features six controllable puppet characters who are subject to your every mouse click. Click around, play with the keyboard, and have fun seeing what these Henson creations can do! This hilarious, heart-warming, wonderfully designed, and technically innovative piece is everything that Jim was about. Puppets, humor, technology, and weird. Be sure to check out Google and Henson's "Making of" video to find out even more about the Google Doodle!
The Jim Henson Company has been going wild on social media outlets over the past few days in celebration of Jim's birthday. Their Twitter feed has been overflowing with fantastic quotes about and by Jim, all with the hashtag #Henson75. If you want to join in the fun on Twitter, just tag your posts with #Henson75! Let's get it trending! On YouTube they've been posting a horde of classic Henson content including some content featuring Kermit and the rest of the Muppets owned by Disney. In honor of Jim's 75th, the fine folks at Disney have allowed The Jim Henson Company to post some great videos including "Rainbow Connection," "Mahna Mahna," Harry Belafonte's "Turn the World Around" from The Muppet Show, the Pigs in Space sketch from the Carol Channing episode of The Muppet Show, and the magnificent finale from The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson. Plus, YouTube's spotlight for today is on Jim Henson's 75th Birthday with tons of puppet videos for your enjoyment!
Sesame Street has uploaded and shared a plethora of incredible new content from its upcoming 42nd season, which starts on Monday, September 26th. Here we see Jim's legacy living on and on through the likes of Elmo, Grover, Cookie Monster, and the multitude of Anything Muppets on the show. Some of the incredible clips shared by Sesame Street on YouTube include "The Heaviest Catch" (with a character performed by Frank Oz), "Measure, Yeah, Measure" with Elmo and a Justin Bieber look-alike, Craig Ferguson and Elmo experimenting with chickens, Grouchology with Jason Jones, and the hysterical (and accurate) Glee parody called "G," which you can see right here below!

In case you'd forgotten, The Muppets is coming out in November and the promotion from Disney is currently all over the place. We've got a brand new, unfinished website about the movie on Disney.com (which also happens to be the number one featured link on all of Disney) and, both on Facebook and Twitter, The Muppets Studio has been getting our excitement level rising, saying "Rumor has it we’re announcing something huge on Monday. And yes, that’s right…we just started that rumor here." and later having Statler and Waldorf, who are still running the Twitter feed, chime in with, "All we keep hearing around the #Muppets theater is about Monday's "exciting news for our fans". You two are in for a real treat! Oh ho ho!" So... who knows what this big news could be, but I bet it really is just as exciting as they're making it sound (at least I hope it is)!

For even more Henson 75th celebrations, check out the ToughPigs.com thoughts on how to celebrate the big day!

And, finally, we'll finish out our Happy Birthday post with another Happy Birthday post... a brief piece written by Brian Henson for Google about his dad. It's really fun and touching, and you can read it all below! Following the piece is a tribute to Jim video shown at MuppetFest in 2001 which, I think, really says it all.

Remembering my dad, Jim Henson
When we were kids, my brother and sisters and I were always allowed to stay up late to watch our father’s appearances on The Tonight Show or The Ed Sullivan Show. No matter how late it was or how young we were, my mother would wake us up and trundle us down to the living room television. We’d be giddy—like Christmas. When he came home, he’d head down to the garage where he had a workshop, and repair everything that we broke while he was away—or build a dollhouse for one of my sisters. Jim never stopped making things.

He also loved games—card games, board games, all kinds of games. He was one of those rare parents who was always ready to play again. He loved dogs, particularly goofy ones. And he lived for those moments when everyone laughed so hard they couldn’t talk. I often walked onto the Muppet set to find everyone just laughing hysterically.

Although he loved family, his work was almost never about “traditional” families. The Muppets were a family—a very diverse one. One of his life philosophies was that we should love people not for their similarities, but for their differences.

Jim often had a little lesson about the important things in life: How to be a good person. How to believe in yourself and follow your dreams. And above all, how to forgive. If anything was stolen from one of us—like when the car was broken into—he would always say, “Oh well, they probably needed that stuff more than we did.”

He loved gadgets and technology. Following his lead, The Jim Henson Company continues to develop cutting-edge technology for animatronics and digital animation, like this cool Google doodle celebrating Jim’s 75th birthday. But I think even he would have found it hilarious the way today some people feel that when they’ve got their smartphone, they no longer need their brain.

Jim was clearly a great visionary. But he also wanted everyone around him fully committed creatively. If you asked him how a movie would turn out, he’d say, “It’ll be what this group can make, and if you changed any one of them, it would be a different movie.” Every day for him was joyously filled with the surprises of other people’s ideas. I often think that if we all lived like that, not only would life be more interesting, we’d all be a lot happier.

Happy 75th Birthday Jim Henson! We love you, miss you, and will never forget you! Thank you for leaving us with a legacy of wonder that will never, ever die as long as we believe in it.

Plus, Happy Birthday to Steve Whitmire as well! Thank you for everything, Steve. Because of you, Jim Henson's legacy, and frog, live on in the hearts, minds, and eyes of people everywhere.

Two New Commercials and a Sneak Peek at "The Muppets"

The promotional engine for The Muppets is being revved fairly often by the Disney powers that be. In the past four days, we've seen a ton of new content promoting the film on television and Disney's main website.

First up is an official, Emmy-themed commercial for the movie that aired during FOX's broadcast of the countdown to the Emmys red carpet ceremony. It's very notable because for the first time in promotion for the movie, we get to hear and see Pepe prominently featured!

Our friend Chris Stulz uploaded the video for us and has also provided us with an awesome breakdown of the commercial! Check it all out below:
0:01 - We start off with new Miss Piggy footage superimposed over what I'm sure is going to be one of the final scenes the new movie. "Reporting" like she's on the Emmy Red Carpet. She is obviously covering up Walter, Kermit, Fozzie, Zoot, Animal, and er, herself from the footage of the movie, but we CAN clearly see Scooter, Rowlf, Dr. Teeth, and Janice wearing a coat. The coat reminds me of the ones you see Ralph Lauren or Robert Redford wearing in the mountains, at Sundance, or in over priced catalogs. But the real question that should get fans heads scratching is why. Why is she wearing a coat? Was is it cold in LA that night? I mean it makes me feel bad for poor Rowlf. All he has on is a golf cap. Poor dog must be freezing!
0:06 - Glamour shot of Animal, Zoot, and Dr. Teeth exiting the theater. "Teeth" as he's affectionally known to OK GO, is wearing a black scarf. Wow all those tassels, long, and and I do mean long, sleeves, his trademark furry hat, and he still needs a scarf? Man, how cold out was it! Now I really feel bad for Rowlf!
0:07-0:09 - Movie footage of Crazy Harry doing what he does best... wear a sweater... wait no, that's not it.. it's him blowing something up! Only this time it's himself! The face Crazy Harry has post explosion is just too awesome for words, and that old school, Wile E. Coyote barrel of TNT next to him is just the icing on the cake! All it needs is an ACME logo!
0:20 - New footage of Statler and Waldorf commenting on not wanting to tell Amy Adams that she's in the movie. She may want to get her agent on the phone! But behind them we get our first glimpse of the theater's seating section and balcony as seen from the stage! Now you can see exactly what Kermit saw from center stage every episode without all those pesky audience member in the way! The set design crew really did their homework and it looks amazing!
0:25-0:28 - THE MUPPETS .. and the announcer doesn't even say "Disney's"... how could this get any better! PEPE!!!!!!! In new footage!!! Telling us the date the movie comes out and then laughing in his perfect devious way!! We haven't seen much of Pepe in the marketing or scenes shown yet in the previous trailers, but this tells me he may not have as minor a role as we thought!
0:30 - Then they end it all with a triumphant shot of Adams and Segal with Piggy, Walter, and Kermit above the Hollywood Boulevard dancers and we can see Thog, Behemoth, Sweetums, and Jim Henson, behind them. Wait, Whoa, Huh? WHAT!... YES you read that correctly. While I know many saw pictures from the filming of these scenes, this trailer in that last two seconds would seem to confirm that yes, the sign that featured Jim did make it into the film so we shall se the man who started it all in this film 21 years after his death. Just amazing!!

And if that weren't enough (and, c'mon, we know it's not), yet another commercial for the movie aired during Tuesday night's season premiere episode of Glee. Lucky for you, I'm an unabashed (well... slightly bashed) Gleek and as soon as I finished watching the episode, I had my brother record the commercial on his iPhone and I uploaded it to The Muppet Mindset YouTube account... check it out below!

We don't have a breakdown of this commercial at the moment... but do take note that it features chickens clucking Cee Lo Green's "Forget You," which is fantastic. Plus, more Pepe (in Behemoth's mouth!), lots of Scooter, penguins, and just a general awesome feeling.

Yet this is still not it! Yesterday, the first video to start playing on Disney.com was an exclusive sneak peek at the movie! It features talk segments with Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Animal, Floyd (yes, Floyd), Jason Segel, Amy Adams, and we get to hear Uncle Deadly speak with Matt Vogel's voice for the first time! (Spoiler: He sounds perfect.) Lucky for you, our friends at Muppet Musings have uploaded the video to YouTube for all to enjoy forever!

How awesome is this? Three brand new videos promoting The Muppets since Sunday... and each with new content. Incredible! What a great time it is to be a Muppet fan.

News Update: September 20, 2011

 NEWS UPDATE:   SEPTEMBER 20, 2011

Promotion for The Muppets is ramping up very quickly, so expect to see Muppets everywhere (except in your closet, unfortunately). First up, Kermit recently filmed a commercial for the celebrity-heavy ad campaign of Wonderful Pistachios. You can check out Kermit's cute TV spot (that you'll surely be seeing all the time on while watching your shows) right here:

On October 2nd, Miss Piggy will be returning to Disney Channel on their extremely popular sketch comedy show So Random! (think SNL for 14 year olds). Piggy will be playing herself as the big, celebrity guest star for the show who everyone on the show attempts to appeal to. You can see the promo for the episode here:

And in extremely random Muppet appearance news, the Muppets will be appearing on the wrestling program WWE Raw on October 31st to promote the movie. The official WWE website provides this little bit of information on the upcoming appearance, "What will happen when Kermit the Frog meets The Viper? Will the Divas make Miss Piggy flip with jealousy? Will Beaker be confused for Sheamus? On Halloween, it's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, because the Muppets are about to get Raw!" I don't really know what any of that means, but this has the potential to be a very fun and funny appearance!

The Museum of Moving Image in New York City, which is currently playing host to the wonderful Jim Henson's Fantastic World exhibit, is having a fun celebration for Jim's birthday on September 24th. Here is a breakdown of what's occurring on the 24th, for more information visit the museum's website:
  • At 1:00 p.m. in the Main Theater, attend the special program “Muppet Music Moments,” with special introductions by Craig Shemin, President of The Jim Henson Legacy, and Bonnie Erickson, Executive Director of The Jim Henson Legacy and designer of Miss Piggy, along with special guest speaker Larry Grossman, music consultant for The Muppet Show. This special 77-minute compilation features performances by Harry Belafonte, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, and other Muppet Show guest stars, in a wide range of musical genres—classic music numbers interpreted as only the Muppets can. Tickets are free with Museum admission and will be distributed first-come, first-served. Museum members may reserve advance tickets. (This compilation program will also be presented on Sunday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. with Larry Grossman in person).
  • Receive a custom-designed commemorative cookie featuring Kermit the Frog’s signature foot prints (as long as supplies last). These artisanal cookies were produced especially for the Museum by Bonne Fete Baking, Inc. and You Cake, Inc., two Queens-based small businesses that operate at the Entrepreneur Space, a partnership of the Queens Economic Development Corporation and Mi kitchen es su kitchen.
  • Watch a special episode of The Muppet Show in which the cast celebrates Kermit the Frog’s birthday. The 22-minute program will screen continuously in the Museum’s Fox Amphitheater in the Education Center and is included with Museum admission.
  • Write a personal message and sign your name in a commemorative journal that will be given to The Jim Henson Legacy for their archives.

Our good friends over at WeLoveFine T-shirts are hosting another official Muppet T-shirt design contest and they want YOUR art! The Grand Prize winner wins $3,000, with prizes for first and second place as well. The winning design will also get printed on a shirt and sold at WeLoveFine. It's really exciting to think of the prospect of another amazing Muppet t-shirt after our friend James Carroll's shirt was printed. Submission deadline is October 2nd before 11:59 PM and voting for the designs opens up on October 14 until November 4, with winners being announced on November 11. And, just between you and me, most of the designs submitted so far pretty much suck (thankfully not all--see right), so to all you extremely talented Muppet fan artists who we know and love... get to it!

Speaking of t-shirts and awesome artists, our friend and staff member James Carroll's gorgeous and insanely awesome "Muppetational Mosaic" design is now being printed on all sorts of things (unfortunately not your chest) at the Threadless-sponsored Society 6. Via the site, you can order Art Prints, Canvas Prints, iPhone Cases, Laptop and iPad Skins, and iPhone and iPod Skins. It's awesome, and some of the proceeds do go to James, whose artwork makes our website so gorgeous (the header). Buy something! (You know, if you can.)

Finally, Disney has given the official website for The Muppets, TheMuppets.com, a complete makeover and Disney website overhaul. On the site, you'll find Characters (descriptions/pages for Kermit and Piggy, with others coming soon), About the Movie (The Story, The Cast, The Crew [coming soon]), Video Clips (just trailers for now, but more probably coming soon), a picture Gallery, Products (currently only selling The Green Album, but Movies, Toys, Books, Apparel, Beauty, Designer Apparel, Kitchen, Electronics, and Sationary coming soon), Games (Coming Soon), and Downloads (Coming Soon). There currently isn't too much to see on the site, aside from a few cool new pictures if you know where to look, but there is certainly a ton coming very soon as promotion heats up. Keep an eye on the movie site and on The Muppet Mindset for whatever might come from Disney!

The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo Trailer Breakdown, Part 2

Yesterday, Disney released the fourth teaser trailer for The Muppets called "The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo," parodying the sporadic trailer for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. This new trailer was so jam-packed with new content and clips from the movie, that we had to separate our traditional trailer breakdown into two parts. Be sure to check out yesterday's Part 1 before diving into today's Part 2. Which, as it so happens, is located conveniently below!

0:40 - Look at him... there he is... right where he belongs. Remember when Kermit said he wanted to make millions of people happy? Well... there ya go. Plus... that whole segue of Kermit walking from distraught theater to the stage to the red carpet... inspired and amazing.
0:42 - Look how happy they all are! Well... except Miss Poogy. You think this means they get to do the telethon? Oh, gee, I hope so... otherwise it'll be a pretty short movie.
0:43 - This is one of the most amazing shots I've ever seen... Gonzo never looked so good!! That cape is extraordinary. Methinks he's jumping off the roof of his plumbing company.
0:44 - Three words: Neil. Patrick. Harris.
0:44 - SO much to say about this... are Uncle Deadly and Tex Richman trying to disable the television broadcast for the telethon? Is Deadly trying to prevent Richman from doing that? It certainly looks like they're fighting over something.
0:48 - Hey-o! That's Alan Arkin! Looks like he really is playing The Muppets Studio tour guide. Love it!!
0:48 - This is one of my favorite, favorite shots. They showed this scene at the D23 Expo and, let me just say, the visual gag that accompanies this image will have you rolling on the floor. But mostly... let's just observe the triumphant, glowing return of our friend the Frog.
0:49 - Look at that funny thing! Obviously Fozzie's head and hand... but that's Scooter's hand sticking out of the other end. My bet is that Kermit, Rowlf, and Animal are stuck in that suit somewhere too.
0:51 - If you haven't had an extreme fan-attack... your eyes are probably closed.
0:53 - Two things... one, I love me an exasperated Kermit. Two, there's a Mutation just hanging out backstage. What year is this?!
0:53 - Tex Richman taking an ax to some sort of electric box... accompanied by Bobo and Uncle Deadly (far right) and the Moopets. So they really are evil!
0:59 - It's time for everyone's favorite game! Spot the Muppets! From left to right... Random Goat thing, Mutation, Luncheon Counter Monster, Cactus, Crocodile, Chicken, Behemoth, Sweetums, Penguin, Marvin Suggs, Geri and the Atrics Drummer, Whatnot 1, Big Mean Carl, Thog, Whatnot 2, Beautiful Day Monster, Quongo, Waldorf, Blue Monster, Whatnot 3, Green Frackle, Statler, Afghan Hound, Pokey, Blustering Bellowpane Monster, Pink Frackle, Rowlf, Bunsen Honeydew, Sheep, Link Hogthrob, Miss Piggy, Blue Frog, Sam Eagle, Crazy Harry, Bunny, Robin, Ram, Animal, Fozzie, Floyd, Walter. How interesting that Statler and Waldorf are there...
0:59 - Who's going to love this movie? Mee mee me!
1:00 - Uncle Deadly... obviously singing in the finale song performance shot on Hollywood Boulevard. Does he become good by the end? Or can he just not pass up a chance to sing?
1:02 - I think this is Kermit and Piggy's walk through Paris... which means that Kermit's suit in this scene was designed by Brooks Brothers. Love it.
1:03 - This is just one of those perfect shots that you don't expect and don't want to see until you see it and you fall in love with it completely.
1:09 - It's time to play the music...
1:10 - It's time to light the lights... Wow. WOW. What an utterly perfect recreation.
1:11 - Look at those Muppets! Just look at them!
1:12 - Happy Muppets in a car! Do we get to find Miss Piggy next, 80's Robot? Oh, just drive...
1:15 - Creepy Miss Poogy... Creepy EVIL Miss Poogy... hoo-boy.

Is it November 23rd yet?

The Pig With the Froggy Tattoo Teaser Trailer Breakdown, Part 1

Did you wake up this morning on the wrong side of the bed? Are you in need of a little pick me up? Having a rough time as summer wains and fall lords over us? Well... lucky for you, the folks at Walt Disney Studios have the cure for... well, the cure for everything:

The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo... the fourth and latest parody trailer (a parody of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trailer) for The Muppets has made my day, week, and month. Heck, if it weren't for the actual movie coming out in November, it might have made my year.

In the grand tradition of every other trailer for this movie,we've taken the liberty of breaking down this brand new trailer for you, new image by new image. This trailer is so completely overflowing with new stuff, however, that we're going to have to split up this breakdown into two parts. (I have a total of 54 different screencaps waiting here.) So check back tomorrow for Part 2, and for now... enjoy the wonder of the first 30 screencaps from The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo.

0:06 - Can you say "Fifteen seconds to curtain?" Because I certainly think Scooter can, and will, in the movie. Also, check out the picture of Scooter and Sylvester Stallone from The Muppet Show on the wall!
0:07 - I really want to know what the Muppets get thrown in jail for... but for now I'll just settle for seeing Gonzo in his classic purple tuxedo once again.
0:10 - It's at this time in the breakdown that I'd like to start taking a tally of Piggy outfits in this trailer. With this one and the one in the clip above we're already up to two... and we're ten seconds in.
0:11 - Hey! That's Rashida Jones! She's very obviously backstage at the Muppet Theater. (How awesome is that?) This is the first time we've actually seen any footage of her in the movie.
0:12 - I can confirm that this scene takes place during the "We Built This City" montage of cleaning up the theater as Kermit tries to find big-name talent for the save the theater telethon. This is after Kermit has, obviously, gone through his entire Rolodex.
0:13 - Poor 80's Robot... he gets left behind in the car while an explosion happens. This is an AWESOME shot.
0:14 - Fozzie STILL can't believe they could afford an explosion that big! I love this... Scooter and Fozzie just chilling on a couch. When have we ever seen that?
0:14 - Ladies and gentlemen, Tex Richman and the Las Vegas show-girl dancers!
0:15 - Check this out! This takes place right after the Muppets finish cleaning the theater and Dr. Teeth turns off the radio playing "We Built This City."
0:19 - LINK! It's Link Hogthrob polishing a mirror! How perfect... how utterly perfect.
0:22 - I'm not entirely sure what's happening here... but I just loved Kermit's face here.
0:24 - Rowlf. Piano. Joyful. Enough said.
0:25 - Two things... one, LIPS! Two, purple tuxedos from The Muppet Show. Three (sorry, three things), Floyd, Animal, Lips, band pit... amazing.
0:26 - This is obviously the first time that Kermit lays eyes on Piggy when the find her in Paris. This shot and the camera movement are almost a perfect mimic of The Muppet Movie.
0:27 - There's Rashida Jones again! I guess this means that her TV executive character works for a station called CDE. Whatever that means.
0:28 - This movie has dancing chickens?! Count me in. (As if you couldn't already.)
0:28 - Does anyone know who this guy is? It looks like he's playing another TV executive... but I don't recognize the actor at all and I assume it's a cameo.
0:30 - Based on the picture frame, I'm pretty sure this is a shot from Kermit's song "Pictures in My Head" that he sings while walking through his empty mansion. LOVE the perfect recreation of the Chef's kitchen!
0:31 - I have a theory about where/when this shot takes place... I'm thinking that this is when Walter discovers Tex Richman's plans to raze the Muppet Theater after he sneaks off during the tour of The Muppets Studio.
0:31 - Statler and Waldorf are back in the balcony once again!!
0:32 - This is really going to be a great musical number. I hope Bobo is acting stupid during it. (Isn't he always?)
0:32 - Gonzo and Camilla do a little dance... but if you look closely, Gonzo is holding a detonator in his other hand (not pictured here). Could HE be the one who blows up Gonzo's Royal Flush?
0:33 - Possibly the most captivating shot in the entire trailer... a picture of Kermit and Piggy, happily married at the end of The Muppets Take Manhattan, torn in two. Note that Kermit is holding it Miss Piggy's half of the picture and Miss Piggy is holding Kermit's half. What does this mean?!
0:34 - Nothing much to say here... other than I love shots filled with random Muppets. (Hi, Zoot!)
0:35 - It's awesome child actor Rico Rodriguez from TV's Modern Family! He looks SO happy to be with those Snowths! (Wouldn't you be?) But just what is he doing with those Snowths?
0:36 - I LOVE this. I'm pretty sure this is one of the first times the Muppets get a look at their dilapidated theater.
0:36 - I have a feeling that this is where Piggy comes through in a big way. Plus... that's a great outfit for her.
0:37 - Wait a minute... that's comedian Sarah Silverman! We didn't know that she was in the movie! What a fantastic surprise! (Mostly because it means that there are sure to be even more surprise cameos!)
0:37 - I LOVE this shot. The supportive Piggy, standing right behind her frog.
0:38 - And, our final shot of part 1, Kermit tears down the barriers and is about to enter the Muppet Theater once again. This was the opening of the scene shown at the D23 Expo last month.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for the rest of our breakdown! We're only 38 seconds in... there's a lot more to see!
