Promotion for The Muppets is ramping up very quickly, so expect to see Muppets everywhere (except in your closet, unfortunately). First up, Kermit recently filmed a commercial for the celebrity-heavy ad campaign of Wonderful Pistachios. You can check out Kermit's cute TV spot (that you'll surely be seeing all the time on while watching your shows) right here:



On October 2nd, Miss Piggy will be returning to Disney Channel on their extremely popular sketch comedy show So Random! (think SNL for 14 year olds). Piggy will be playing herself as the big, celebrity guest star for the show who everyone on the show attempts to appeal to. You can see the promo for the episode here:



And in extremely random Muppet appearance news, the Muppets will be appearing on the wrestling program WWE Raw on October 31st to promote the movie. The official WWE website provides this little bit of information on the upcoming appearance, "What will happen when Kermit the Frog meets The Viper? Will the Divas make Miss Piggy flip with jealousy? Will Beaker be confused for Sheamus? On Halloween, it's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights, because the Muppets are about to get Raw!" I don't really know what any of that means, but this has the potential to be a very fun and funny appearance!

The Museum of Moving Image in New York City, which is currently playing host to the wonderful Jim Henson's Fantastic World exhibit, is having a fun celebration for Jim's birthday on September 24th. Here is a breakdown of what's occurring on the 24th, for more information visit the museum's website:

• At 1:00 p.m. in the Main Theater, attend the special program “Muppet Music Moments,” with special introductions by Craig Shemin, President of The Jim Henson Legacy, and Bonnie Erickson, Executive Director of The Jim Henson Legacy and designer of Miss Piggy, along with special guest speaker Larry Grossman, music consultant for The Muppet Show. This special 77-minute compilation features performances by Harry Belafonte, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, and other Muppet Show guest stars, in a wide range of musical genres—classic music numbers interpreted as only the Muppets can. Tickets are free with Museum admission and will be distributed first-come, first-served. Museum members may reserve advance tickets. (This compilation program will also be presented on Sunday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m. with Larry Grossman in person).
• Receive a custom-designed commemorative cookie featuring Kermit the Frog’s signature foot prints (as long as supplies last). These artisanal cookies were produced especially for the Museum by Bonne Fete Baking, Inc. and You Cake, Inc., two Queens-based small businesses that operate at the Entrepreneur Space, a partnership of the Queens Economic Development Corporation and Mi kitchen es su kitchen.
• Watch a special episode of The Muppet Show in which the cast celebrates Kermit the Frog’s birthday. The 22-minute program will screen continuously in the Museum’s Fox Amphitheater in the Education Center and is included with Museum admission.
• Write a personal message and sign your name in a commemorative journal that will be given to The Jim Henson Legacy for their archives.

Our good friends over at WeLoveFine T-shirts are hosting another official Muppet T-shirt design contest and they want YOUR art! The Grand Prize winner wins $3,000, with prizes for first and second place as well. The winning design will also get printed on a shirt and sold at WeLoveFine. It's really exciting to think of the prospect of another amazing Muppet t-shirt after our friend James Carroll's shirt was printed. Submission deadline is October 2nd before 11:59 PM and voting for the designs opens up on October 14 until November 4, with winners being announced on November 11. And, just between you and me, most of the designs submitted so far pretty much suck (thankfully not all--see right), so to all you extremely talented Muppet fan artists who we know and love... get to it!

Speaking of t-shirts and awesome artists, our friend and staff member James Carroll's gorgeous and insanely awesome "Muppetational Mosaic" design is now being printed on all sorts of things (unfortunately not your chest) at the Threadless-sponsored Society 6. Via the site, you can order Art Prints, Canvas Prints, iPhone Cases, Laptop and iPad Skins, and iPhone and iPod Skins. It's awesome, and some of the proceeds do go to James, whose artwork makes our website so gorgeous (the header). Buy something! (You know, if you can.)

Finally, Disney has given the official website for The Muppets, TheMuppets.com, a complete makeover and Disney website overhaul. On the site, you'll find Characters (descriptions/pages for Kermit and Piggy, with others coming soon), About the Movie (The Story, The Cast, The Crew [coming soon]), Video Clips (just trailers for now, but more probably coming soon), a picture Gallery, Products (currently only selling The Green Album, but Movies, Toys, Books, Apparel, Beauty, Designer Apparel, Kitchen, Electronics, and Sationary coming soon), Games (Coming Soon), and Downloads (Coming Soon). There currently isn't too much to see on the site, aside from a few cool new pictures if you know where to look, but there is certainly a ton coming very soon as promotion heats up. NEWS UPDATE: September 9, 2011

All week long, MTV.com has been showcasing its Fall Movie Preview. And one of the films that the folks over at MTV are most excited about is, of course, The Muppets. They're so excited, in fact, that they sat down for an interview with Jason Segel, who apparently likes Muppets quite a bit. In the interview, Segel discusses Walter's favorite Muppet, great Fozzie Bear puns, how Rowlf just loves a nap, and much, much more. Be sure to give it a read, because it really is quite awesome.



Speaking of The Muppets, big news this week as the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) granted the movie an official rating. The Muppets is rated PG for mild rude humor. Who knows what that pertains to in the film... but I like to think that they just gave it that rating as a precaution because Jason Segel and Jack Black are in it. I think it's an excellent sign that the film is rated PG, rather than G. A G rating would have turned away a lot of older movie-goers, but PG is the perfect spot for the Muppets to be to hit the widest amount of people.

Two more Muppet-related books have been announced as tie-ins to the movie. Oddly enough, information on either book can only be found on the UK Amazon, not the US. Check out the information and cover art for both below!

In other merchandise news for The Muppets, Adidas has announced that they will be releasing a limited edition set of Kermit the Frog sneakers called "Kermit the Frog x Adidas Superstar II." You can see a picture of one of the shoes at right, complete with an awesome froggy collar above the laces. I have to own these... no way around it.

In even more merchandise news, the first wave of readily-available Muppet stuff related to the movie has officially been released! Wal-Mart stores are now carrying numerous Muppet keychains to make your keys a little bit happier. There are numerous Miss Piggy variations, quite a few Kermits and Animals, at least one Gonzo, a nice group shot (with Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and Gonzo), a rubber Kermit M as used in the movie logo, and, finally, an awesome Electric Mayhem keychain (see at right). There are at least fifteen different keychains available... so if this is any sign of what we'll be getting come November, we're in for a treat!

Finally, yesterday marked the beginning of Fashion Week in New York, and you couldn't keep Miss Piggy away from it. The porcine diva showed up last night to be beautiful and mingle with fashionistas. Opening Cermony (which is apparently a company?) posted an interview with Miss P. that sheds some insight into her forays into fashion and her thoughts on numerous other things. But, luckily for us, our good friends at Stitch Kingdom were live at Miss Piggy's appearance and captured some excellent photos and video for us. The historic (and Disney-owned) El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, on Hollywood Boulevard, where many scenes from The Muppets were filmed earlier this year, is hosting a special event this November through January to welcome the arrival of the first theatrical Muppet movie in 12 years. The event is being billed as The Most Sensational Muppet Party and takes place at The El Capitan and the adjacent Disney Soda Fountain and Studio Store. From November 23rd to January 5th, families can join The El Capitan for finger sandwiches, fruit salad, cupcake decorating, and "Wocka Wocka Wocka" fun for everyone. In addition, every guest receives a commemorative photo and and a special gift. The El Capitan is also stating that there will be a Holiday Sing-a-Long with Kermit and Miss Piggy LIVE on stage before every movie. If you're in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area, this sounds like an event you can't pass up! For more information, check out The El Capitan online.

As you all know, last week Animal and Miss Piggy appeared on The Tonight Show with OK Go. Unfortunately, in an egregious error we never posted a link to the video. Thankfully, our good friends over at ToughPigs did all the hard work for us so all we have to do is mention their name and show off the video. So... thanks for that.



Our good friends at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia are having an amazing auction to benefit the center and all the good it does to spread the magic of puppetry throughout the world. This is a fantastic cause that I whole-heartedly support, especially when they offer spectacular auction items such as the gorgeous Palisades Toys Jim Henson action figure signed by puppet designer Bonnie Erickson. This also includes a candid shot of Jim, Bonnie, and the Jim Henson Muppet, also signed by Bonnie. It's a wonderful piece, and you should bid on it!

Finally, the chronicles of our friend James Carroll, designer of our awesome main page header, and the Threadless Muppet contest have come to an oh-so-satisfying conclusion. Amazon.com recently released previews of all the cover tracks from Muppets: The Green Album, set for release on August 23rd. This means that now we can hear a snippet off every song on the album and get a good feel for what the song will sound like. I really enjoy most all of the songs covered--and of course a few stand out above the rest--but I think I'll just have to hear the whole album before I decide anything firm. So... in conclusion, bring on this album!

Speaking of bringing things on connected with Muppets: The Green Album, in a YouTube video posted the other day, OK Go's Damian Kulash announced that the band would be making a music video together with the Muppets centered around OK Go's cover of "The Muppet Show Theme Song" from The Green Album. This is hugely exciting news for many reasons: one, it's a brand new Muppet music video coming our way; two, it's OK Go, who, no matter what you may think of their music, make incredibly innovative and instantly-viral music videos; and three, putting the Muppets' power of instantly making music videos go viral with OK Go's means instant web sensation. No word on when the music video will be out, but a very reliable source (read: a Muppeteer) has revealed that filming for the video commenced this week. 

After months of praise and adoration from the film-going public and critics alike, the highly acclaimed documentary chronicling the careers of both Kevin Clash and Elmo, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey, is finally going beyond the film festival circuit and reaching public theaters all around the country in big cities including Los Angeles, Seatle, San Francisco, St. Louis, and many more. Starting on November 4th in three theaters and spreading to a total of 22 theaters by the end of its release run, Being Elmo should be coming to a theater near you. Our friend Matt James from Party Ideas By a Pro has sent us a link to the website where one of their latest blog posts is all about fantastic Elmo Birthday Party ideas, including food recipes that all look like Elmo (see right), party favors, decorations, party games, and more all themed around everyone's favorite furry red monster. If I had a little kid I know I couldn't keep myself from throwing him/her an Elmo-themed birthday bash... so now all of you readers with kids have to do it so I can live vicariously through you.

Awhile back we mentioned that the SpiritHoods company was making a series of Muppet-themed SpiritHoods (which are basically furry little hat-arm things). News Update: June 18, 2011

With all the Muppet movie excitement that has been sweeping all around us these past few days, we have missed out on some fun, cool news items from other branches of Muppet fandom. Let's get caught up some, shall we? And, of course, this News Update ends with even more news about The Muppets.

Those lucky ToughPigs, Joe Hennes and Ryan Roe, have been posting videos from their oh-so-awesome visit to the set of Sesame Street. First, they talked to Emilio Delgado and Roscoe Orman, then it was Carmen Oshbar, Leslie Carrara-Rudolph, Rosita, and Abby Cadabby, and now they got to talk to Steve Whitmire, Eric Jacobson, and Matt Vogel. If I didn't like them (and this video) so much, I'd hate them (and plus they managed to mention The Muppet Mindset... so all is forgiven). Check it out!



The D23 Expo will be held once again this year in Anaheim, California on August 19-21. A tradition for Disney for years has been inducting new members into its distinguished Disney Legends Awards, honoring individuals who have contributed quite a bit to the Disney stable. 2009's honorees included Betty White and Tony Anselmo, voice of Donald Duck. The honorees at this year's expo include Regis Philbin, the voices of Disney Princesses, the original Zorro, and none other than Jim Henson. It is unknown who will be on-hand (that's a joke, son) to accept the award for Jim, but I'll be sure to let you know, because I've officially decided that I will be attending and live-blogging from the D23 Expo this year! So... yeah, there's that to look forward to.

Late this past Wednesday night I got a text from Lisa the Intern saying, "Paul Williams on Jimmy Fallon NOW! Watch!" Unfortunately, I was with four friends in the middle of a movie that I don't remember, so I couldn't watch. However, thanks to the magic of Hulu, Paul Williams' appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon is now online for all of us to see. Here's the video of Paul closing the show performing "Rainbow Connection" with The Roots.



A week ago, Sesame Street posted a preview of a brand new sketch from Season 42 on their YouTube page called SpiderMonster, The Musical and somehow we missed that too. It's hysterical and charming and features a (semi) cameo by Bono. We have received confirmation that the performers in this sketch are indeed Jerry Nelson as Mr. Johnson/Fat Blue and Frank Oz as Grover. How awesome is that?



Rolling Stone magazine is reporting that the band Scissor Sisters have been tapped to score the music for the Fraggle Rock feature film, but then quickly edited the article with a quote from The Jim Henson Company saying no deal has been made with the band, but they are in talks with Scissor Sisters and others. This is odd for many reasons, since we have no idea who even owns distribution/production rights for the film (we've heard through the grapevine that The Weinstein Company is out). So... take this article as you will. Could be vastly old, unreported news from when the film was still maybe happening, or it could be something else entirely. In other words... we have no idea.

In "movies that are actually happening" news, ComingSoon.net has posted a fantastic new article, "It's Time to Light the Lights!: On Set with The Muppets" chronicling their visit to the set of The Muppets. They get to talk with Jason Segel, Amy Adams, and producers Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman. It's a really well-written, heartfelt article that also provides us with some information we didn't know.

Remember that robot seen driving the car in the full length trailer? Well, apparently his name is 80's Robot, "'80s Robot looks exactly like a larger scale version of any generic sci-fi toy you would have seen on your local drug store toy aisle back in the early '80s. Unlike most Muppets, '80s Robot appeared to be almost 100% plastic. Not the traditional felt and cloth we associate with Muppets. To that end, it is probably incorrect to label '80s Robot a Muppet at all. What we do know is that '80s Robot is Kermit's driver... as it is him in the driver's seat of the Rolls for the scene. This was later confirmed on set by Debbie McClellan, Disney's creative director for the Muppets (and again confirmed in the new trailer)."

And the burly looking pig we've been wondering about since the first teaser trailer? That's Miss Poogy. According to the article, "Poogy is the anti-Piggy. A ruddy, rough-looking pig adorned in leather and chains, Poogy addressed the others while sharpening a knife in her left hand. She was obviously getting the crew mixed up in something bad, telling them not to 'worry about it' and expressing surprise that they'd never 'done this before.'"

As reported a little over a year ago, more Muppet Star Wars toys are coming to Disney Parks. No release date was given for these new 2-pack figures of the Muppet characters portraying Star Wars favorites, but smart betters placed their money on a Fall 2011 release to coincide with the release of The Muppets... and they were right. New images of prototypes of the figures, now officially due out this fall, have surfaced online in various locations, including Walt Disney World's official blog and the Nerdist website. A picture of all the figures, Kermit as Luke Skywalker, Miss Piggy as Princess Leia, Fozzie Bear as Chewbacca, Link Hogthrob as Han Solo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew as R2-D2, Beaker as C-3PO, Sam Eagle as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Gonzo the Great as Darth Vader (with Camilla the Stormtrooper), can be seen below.

Some keen-eyed ToughPigs have found links on Amazon.com for The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets From Space on Blu-ray, apparently scheduled for release in August of this year. This would make sense, considering Sony still owns the distribution rights to these films and would obviously want to cash in on the fall's Muppet craze without needing to wait for Disney. Take all of this very lightly, however, because there has been no sort of official announcement about these releases and both listings on Amazon have some guy named Lambert Wilson listed as the primary actor... and he appears in neither movie. So... who really knows? It would certainly be great to see some Muppets on Blu-ray though!

A new series of three Muppet-themed PEZ Dispensers are being released to coincide with The Muppets this fall. The set will include Kermit, Miss Piggy, and, for the first time, Animal. These are not the first Muppet PEZ, as can be seen on Muppet Wiki's page, but the sculpts of the heads seem to be vastly improved. Hopefully we'll see Gonzo and Fozzie PEZ as well (you know, so I have something ELSE to spend my money on this fall...).

Finally, our good friends (and lucky sons of guns) Joe Hennes and Ryan Roe of ToughPigs had the incredible opportunity to stop by the set of Sesame Street for a visit while they were filming a brand new episode. Those ToughPigs included an amazing video interview with Roscoe Orman (Gordon) and Emilio Delgado (Luis) and of the episode being recorded on set. The episode includes Ernie, Bert, Gordon, Susan, and Oscar... how awesome is that?! I am insanely jealous... but I love it. The best part is that it's only part one, so there's more to look forward to from those lucky luck ToughPigs on Sesame Street.

Sesame Workshop recently debuted three new animated shorts starring Grover on their YouTube channel. These shorts are meant to provide basic safety information to children such as remembering to wear a helmet, buckling your seatbelt, and looking both ways before crossing the street. The videos feature Grover in various outfits and occupations, including astronaut, airplane pilot, and safari guide. According to Sesame Workshop's official information about these videos, "Sesame Workshop has appointed Grover as the Road Safety Ambassador as part of the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety. In these three Public Service Announcements, Grover promotes road safety behaviors addressing seatbelt, helmet and street crossing safety. The goal is to make road safety a family priority and a shared family experience." Based on the lack of dialogue and international appeal of Grover, these videos are set to go global as part of the United Nations' goal, which is great for everyone's favorite Road Safety Ambassador Monster.

In more Grover news, a third Sesame Street video game for Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS is coming in August. Ready, Set, Grover! stars Grover, Elmo, and Abby Cadabby as they play through an exciting obstacle course filled with active movements and adventure. According to the official website for the game (which includes some awesome screenshots) the game promotes healthy life habits including physical activity, nutrition, hygiene, and rest. As with the previous two Sesame games, Ready, Set, Grover! includes an exclusive Grover Wii-Remote cover or a jumbo Grover stylus for the Nintendo DS.

In even more Grover news, he, Elmo, and Cookie Monster made quite a few live appearances at various airports around the country to promote the brand new Sesame Street DVD Elmo's Travel Songs and Games, which was released this past Tuesday. The monsters traveled to numerous Delta terminals including ones in Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Atlanta Airport. According to Sesame Street's Twitter feed, Cookie Monster was in charge of getting guests to board the plane, which went predictably poorly. "The downside of having Elmo, Grover, and Cookie here? No one is boarding the plane! We hope the flight doesn't leave without the passengers!"No word yet on if all passengers made it to where they were going. I know I would have just stayed...

The Muppets Studio actually posted something on Facebook on Wednesday, which is usually very exciting, and this time was no different. In the post, seen here, they posted the picture of Jason Segel with the Muppets from Entertainment Weekly that we've all seen a million times already. But what is notable about this post is that they also linked to two Facebook fan pages. One for Kermit the Frog and one for Miss Piggy. We're still not positive if these are official fan pages, but the fact that Muppets linked to them and currently also have them listed under their "Likes" points to them being very official. So go "like" them yourselves, Muppet fans!

Another random cameo has been announced for this fall's The Muppets, but this time it isn't a person, it's a place! The Bonanza Casino in Reno, Nevada has been revealed as a location for the new movie, specifically where Fozzie Bear will be seen performing with "The Moopets," a Muppet tribute band that Fozzie joined up with after the Muppets split. KTVN News in Reno has a scoop on the filming, but it's not known whether shots of the casino were just used to establish location or if the Muppets actually filmed inside.

And, finally, thanks to our friends over at ToughPigs and their handy-dandy countdown clock to The Muppets at the top of their home page, we now know that it is exactly 200 days until The Muppets comes to U.S. theaters! That may seem like a lot... and that's because it is. But we're getting closer and closer all the time which is ridiculously exciting.  And... that's all I have to say about that.

Our good friends over at Mighty Fine T-Shirts have alerted us to some fun new Muppet and Sesame Street t-shirts available in their store. There are three odd but cool Sesame Street Zombie t-shirts. Designed by Evan Cheng, these shirts are exclusive to Mighty Fine and include Big Bird, Elmo, and Oscar zombies declaring "B is for Brains," Bert and Ernie zombies who are frenemies of the human race, and, finally, The Count simply shouting "Blah!". These shirts are odd, indeed, there's no denying that... but they are officially licensed Sesame shirts and relatively cute, so think what you will! Mighty Fine also has a great selection of Muppet shirts and other Sesame Street shirts as well. Check out their whole stock!

Our friends working on the upcoming essay collection From Fraggle Rock to Farscape have asked us to pass along the information that deadline for entries for inclusion in the upcoming book is fast-approaching. If you would like to submit an article for the collection, simply write an essay having to do with anything from Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Dog City, and basically anything Henson-related that isn't Muppets or Sesame Street and submit your article or your idea to jennifer.garlen@gmail.com. The publishers are really hoping to develop a book that covers the wide breadth of Jim Henson's work--so have at it, Muppet fans!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, which is now the distributor of Sesame Street DVDs, has released a press release on WBShop.com for a new DVD set they're calling "Sesame Street: The Best of Sesame Street Spoofs" and is scheduled for release on July 5. The spoofs will come in two volumes, so presumably this will be quite the collection of Sesame's greatest parodies. Here is the official DVD synopsis from Warner Bros.:

From the beginning, Sesame Street has always been known for entertaining both children and adults with spoofs on popular culture that happen to teach something too! Now the best of these segments have been culled together in a special 2 disc set for Sesame Street fans featuring classic content on disc 1 and more recent spoofs on disc 2. On Sesame Street, "Grey's Anatomy" becomes "A's Anatomy", "Mad Men" is really about teaching emotions, and "The Closer" is about "open" and "close". Fans will be nostalgic over old school classics "Hill Street Two's", "Born To Add" and "Miami Mice". This special collection will be treasured by adult fans of the series but can be enjoyed by the entire family.

After that super cool news of an awesome release from Sesame Workshop, check out this lame release from Disney: the 2012 calendar from The Muppets which is essentially a reprint of the Muppet parody calendars from 1999. While we're still on the subject of merchandise, the Vinylmation Muppets Series 2 figures are finally available to order on DisneyStore.com. The figures can be ordered individually in blind-boxes or you can order a box of blind-box figures that comes with 24 and is guaranteed to include ever figure, including the chaser (Waldo C. Graphic). Or, you can just be like me and order all 12 on eBay... (That's my collection in the picture.) (Anyone selling/giving away a Kermit figure?) 

Everyone's favorite touring exhibit from The Jim Henson Legacy, Jim Henson's Fantastic World, is finally coming to New York City! Starting in July, the exhibit will find its home for the remainder of the year in Astoria, Queens where Jim Henson's work will be featured on display.
